10 Gnostic protection amulets that depict Abrasax, Ialdabaoth, Samael and many other entities. Check out these absolutely beautiful relics of Gnosticism.
Gnosticism is, in many ways, the root of the occult tradition, even if all we have left is Gnostic protection amulets and a few fragmentary writings. A group of early Christians that sought direct connection to Christ through sex, drugs and ritual magick, the Gnostics were wiped out of existence and history by the early Church. But thanks to 20th century archaeological discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi Codices
, the Gnostics have once again come to prominence and become a subject of fascination for writers, academics, religious historians and the public at large. While the Church still condemns the Gnostics as heretics, their elaborate science-fiction cosmology, in which Christ returns from outside the universe not to fulfill the will of “God” but to save humanity from God (the blind, malevolent demiurge of the Old Testament, who might have created the world but should certainly not be entrusted with its care), continues to have massive cultural impact.
The Gnostics were serious practitioners of magick, and their long, vowel-based magical incantations and spells litter their extant writings. Even though they were wiped out, their practices and cosmology likely inspired the entire occult tradition, from the Cathars and Albigensians to Hermeticism and Kabbalah, to Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism, all the way up to the modern occult revival. Gnosticism particularly influenced Aleister Crowley, who attempted to revive the tradition with his Gnostic Mass (written for the Ordo Templi Orientis), as well as the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, who reimagined gnosticism through a modern lens in his VALIS trilogy.
Below, you’ll find ten Gnostic protection amulets, which depict the many beings of their arcane cosmology, including Abrasax, Ialdabaoth, Samael and many more.
